Despite the fact that Dr. Maria Montessori began developing this method of education in 1901, advocates of this method insist that it is on the cutting edge of the current reform movement in education. The Montessori program includes:

  • multi-age classrooms

  • early childhood

  • a rich and extensive curriculum

  • cross-discipline learning

  • individualized instruction and curriculum

  • writing before reading

  • exposure to classical literature

  • testing by portfolio

  • development of self-discipline

  • teaching values

  • allowing self-discovery instead of spoon-fed information

Since the system was re-introduced to the United States around 1960, thousands of private and many public Montessori schools have opened.

 

We are proud of our program and our teachers who believe in the method and protect the philosophy within the Montessori classroom environment and we are also proud to celebrate our 26th anniversary this school year.

The main objective of the St. Maarten Montessori School is to provide a carefully planned, stimulating environment which will help children develop within themselves the foundation habits, attitudes, skills and ideas which are essential for a lifetime of creative thinking and learning.

The specific goals for the children who attend the school are:
