About St. Maarten Montessori

For nearly a century, perhaps one of the best-kept “secrets” in education has been the highly successful approach developed by the first female physician in Italy, Dr. Maria Montessori.

About Montessori Continued

Despite the fact that Dr. Maria Montessori began developing this method of education in 1901, advocates of this method insist that it is on the cutting edge of the current reform movement in education. The Montessori program includes:

  • multi-age classrooms

  • early childhood

  • a rich and extensive curriculum

  • cross-discipline learning

  • individualized instruction and curriculum

  • writing before reading

  • exposure to classical literature

  • testing by portfolio

  • development of self-discipline

  • teaching values

  • allowing self-discovery instead of spoon-fed information

  • using hands-on material

  • fostering scientific and mathematical aptitudes

  • nurturing appreciation for history and timelines

  • instilling value and appreciation for cultural differences

  • caring for our global environment

  • school setting with a “family atmosphere”

Since the system was re-introduced to the United States around 1960, thousands of private and many public Montessori schools have opened.

We are proud of our program and our teachers who believe in the method and protect the philosophy within the Montessori classroom environment and we are also proud to celebrate our 26th anniversary this school year.

The main objective of the St. Maarten Montessori School is to provide a carefully planned, stimulating environment which will help children develop within themselves the foundation habits, attitudes, skills and ideas which are essential for a lifetime of creative thinking and learning.

The specific goals for the children who attend the school are:
  • To develop a positive attitude toward the school and learning.

  • To develop a sense of high self-esteem.

  • To build habits of concentration for lifelong study skills.

  • To develop and foster an abiding curiosity.

  • To develop habits of initiative and persistence.

  • To foster inner discipline and a sense of order.

  • To develop sensory-motor skills in order to sharpen the ability to discriminate and judge.

  • To develop socially acceptable behavior.

  • To acquire the basic skills necessary for a lifetime of learning.

  • To develop the individual’s innate, ultimate potential through high self-expectations.
